Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as xml-remove-elements.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- types.json
- sample.json
- people.json
- other.json
- sample.jsonl
- flat.json
- sample.xml
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is xml-remove-elements.py.
Run the script
python "xml-remove-elements.py" --input "sample.xml" --tag "pages" --output "without-pages.xml"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Write an XML copy without subtrees matching an exact tag. Both pages elements disappear while book titles remain.

How it works
- Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
- The root is protected; removing a child also removes its tail text, so use only when that is intended.
- Both pages elements disappear while book titles remain.
Make it your own
--tag
For namespaced elements supply an expanded {namespace}tag value.
Adapt the processing
Edit main's child condition to also require a specific attribute.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
The target element remains.
Match its complete expanded tag, including namespace braces.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
