Keep a working starting point
Save an untouched copy of the download. Run its sample first and keep the output as a baseline. This gives you something to compare with when a later modification behaves differently.
Try parameters first
Look for a flag that already controls what you need. Changing --output is simpler than editing a hardcoded path. The guide’s modification suggestions name the relevant parameters, variables, or functions.
Change one behavior
Choose one goal: include a different file type, group by another CSV field, change a threshold, or add an output column. Make a small edit, save, and rerun the same sample.
Create a tiny test case
Include an ordinary input, an empty input, and a boundary case. If your rule is “larger than 10,” check 9, 10, and 11. For file operations, use a disposable folder with three files and verify the preview before applying.
Document your version
Update the introductory comment and note the input format your version expects. Keep a short example command beside the script. When it works, save a copy under a descriptive name so the original remains available.
Put it into practice
Choose one small task from the library, run its example, and change one thing you understand.
