Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as mbox-sender-counts.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- sample.eml
- sample.mbox
- body.txt
- note.txt
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is mbox-sender-counts.py.
Run the script
python "mbox-sender-counts.py" --input "sample.mbox" --output "senders.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Summarize how many exported messages come from each parsed sender address. ada@example.test has one message in the fixture.

How it works
- All messages are read from local files; no SMTP, browser, or email-service connection is used.
- Display names are excluded; casefold groups address spellings for a practical inventory, though unusual case-sensitive local parts can be merged.
- ada@example.test has one message in the fixture.
Make it your own
--input
Choose another local MBOX export.
Adapt the processing
Edit main's sender key if local-part case must be preserved.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
Missing sender appears as a category.
Messages with no parseable From address are counted under <missing>.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
