Sample JSON Lines reproducibly

Select a seeded random subset without replacement.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesCreates a new result and refuses overwrite; input is unchanged. Nonstandard NaN/Infinity JSON is rejected; nested documents can exceed the interpreter recursion limit.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as jsonl-sample.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • types.json
  • sample.json
  • people.json
  • other.json
  • sample.jsonl
  • flat.json
  • sample.xml

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is jsonl-sample.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "jsonl-sample.py" --input "sample.jsonl" --count 1 --seed 3 --output "one.jsonl"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Select a seeded random subset without replacement. The result contains exactly one fixture record.

How it works

  1. Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
  2. Selected row indices are sorted so retained records keep their original relative order.
  3. The result contains exactly one fixture record.

Make it your own

--seed

Choose another --seed for a different selection.

Adapt the processing

Remove sorted in main when random output order is desired.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

Count exceeds the input size.

Reduce --count or provide more records.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
