Prune empty values from JSON

Remove nested nulls and empty containers while retaining zero and false.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesCreates a new result and refuses overwrite; input is unchanged. Nonstandard NaN/Infinity JSON is rejected; nested documents can exceed the interpreter recursion limit.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as json-prune-empty.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • types.json
  • sample.json
  • people.json
  • other.json
  • sample.jsonl
  • flat.json
  • sample.xml

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is json-prune-empty.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "json-prune-empty.py" --input "sample.json" --output "pruned.json"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Remove nested nulls and empty containers while retaining zero and false. The sample's empty:null property disappears.

How it works

  1. Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
  2. Children are pruned before parents; removing list elements changes subsequent array indices.
  3. The sample's empty:null property disappears.

Make it your own

--keep-empty-string

Add --keep-empty-string to retain empty text.

Adapt the processing

Edit keep to preserve empty lists when your schema requires them.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

Array positions move.

Do not prune arrays whose numeric positions serve as identities.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
