Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as json-pretty.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- types.json
- sample.json
- people.json
- other.json
- sample.jsonl
- flat.json
- sample.xml
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is json-pretty.py.
Run the script
python "json-pretty.py" --input "sample.json" --output "pretty.json" --indent 2If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Write indented JSON without changing its structure. The sample expands members into readable indented lines.

How it works
- Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
- --sort-keys optionally sorts object keys; numeric and text types remain distinct.
- The sample expands members into readable indented lines.
Make it your own
--indent
Use --indent 4 for four spaces.
Adapt the processing
Edit main's ensure_ascii setting to True for ASCII-only output.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
A trailing comma is rejected.
Correct invalid JSON before formatting.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
