Inventory nested JSON field names

Count object-key occurrences throughout a document.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesCreates a new result and refuses overwrite; input is unchanged. Nonstandard NaN/Infinity JSON is rejected; nested documents can exceed the interpreter recursion limit.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as json-key-inventory.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • types.json
  • sample.json
  • people.json
  • other.json
  • sample.jsonl
  • flat.json
  • sample.xml

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is json-key-inventory.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "json-key-inventory.py" --input "sample.json" --output "keys.json"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Count object-key occurrences throughout a document. name and score each occur twice.

How it works

  1. Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
  2. Identically spelled keys are grouped even when they occur under different parents or array items.
  3. name and score each occur twice.

Make it your own

--input

Use a representative export to inspect its field vocabulary.

Adapt the processing

Edit main's counted expression to include parent path when locations should stay distinct.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

Counts exceed root-key counts.

Nested object keys intentionally contribute.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
