Create an email copy without attachment parts

Write a separate EML copy with attachment-disposition child parts removed.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesReads local exports and creates a separate result, refusing overwrite. EML files are capped at 25 MiB; MBOX exports at 100 MiB and 5000 messages. Output can contain private message text and addresses. Drafts are local .eml files and are never sent. Attachment files are copied as data and never executed.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as eml-remove-attachments.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • sample.eml
  • sample.mbox
  • body.txt
  • note.txt

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is eml-remove-attachments.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "eml-remove-attachments.py" --input "sample.eml" --output "without-attachments.eml"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Write a separate EML copy with attachment-disposition child parts removed. The fixture keeps Hello Bo and removes the attached notes.txt part.

How it works

  1. All messages are read from local files; no SMTP, browser, or email-service connection is used.
  2. Inline parts are retained even if they have a filename; removal changes MIME content and invalidates original content signatures.
  3. The fixture keeps Hello Bo and removes the attached notes.txt part.

Make it your own

--output

Choose a new .eml name that distinguishes the stripped copy.

Adapt the processing

Edit strip's condition to also remove named inline parts only when that is intended.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

An inline image remains.

Only Content-Disposition: attachment parts are removed; inline content may be essential to the message.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
