Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as csv-fill-empty.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- sample.csv
- lookup.csv
- second.csv
- wide.csv
- numbers.csv
- sample.tsv
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is csv-fill-empty.py.
Run the script
python "csv-fill-empty.py" --input "sample.csv" --column "amount" --value "0" --output "filled.csv"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Fill genuinely empty cells in one column without changing existing values. Cy's amount becomes 0 and the other two amounts remain unchanged.

How it works
- read_csv checks unique headers and row widths before processing.
- The check matches the empty string; cells containing whitespace or the literal text NULL are left alone.
- Cy's amount becomes 0 and the other two amounts remain unchanged.
Make it your own
--value
Set --value Unknown for missing categorical values.
Adapt the processing
Edit the equality check to use .strip() == '' when whitespace-only cells should count as missing.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
A space-only cell is not filled.
Run csv-trim-whitespace first or adjust the documented emptiness test.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
